(Rome) Italy will be without Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini for the group stage of the 2023 Davis Cup which will take place from September 12 to 17 in Bologna, its captain Filippo Volandri announced on Thursday.

Sixth in the ATP rankings, Sinner, beaten Monday in the round of 16 of the United States Open by the German Alexander Zverev 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, announced on its networks social workers that he “didn’t have enough time to recover after the American tour.”

Berrettini (36th) was forced to retire in the 2nd round of the US Open after injuring his right ankle.

“We wish Jannik a good rest, we know that the Davis Cup is close to his heart, he has shown it in the past,” Volandri explained.

“Matteo was unlucky once again, he was ready to play, we expect him for our next matches,” he continued.

As for Fognini, now 146th in the world at 36, it is a choice justified by his recent results and “the need to have players offering maximum guarantees”.

Italy, who will be up against defending champions Canada, Chile and Sweden, will be represented by Lorenzo Musetti (18th), Lorenzo Sonego (39th), Matteo Arnaldi (61st), Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, respectively 43rd and 41st in the world doubles rankings.

In 2022, it reached the last four where it lost 2 to 1 against Canada.
