The United States will then organize in 2026, with Canada and Mexico, the first World Cup with 48 countries – instead of 32.

The dates, host cities and match schedule for this new tournament will be established later, FIFA said.

The FIFA Council has also postponed the launch of the application process for the organization of the 2030 World Cup, which will begin after its next meeting scheduled for September or October 2023. The name of the host country (s) will be announced at the end of 2024.
