(Milan) Italian international Nicolo Fagioli on Tuesday extended his contract with Juventus Turin until 2028, while he is serving a seven-month suspension for sports betting.
“Juventus is pleased to announce that Nicolo Fagioli’s contract has been renewed until June 30, 2028,” the Serie A club said in a statement. The 22-year-old midfielder, a great hope in Italian football, is expected to earn 1.5 million euros per season according to the Italian press.
Fagioli can theoretically play again by the end of the season, with the 38th and final day of the championship scheduled for May 26, a week after the end of his suspension.
The Italian was suspended in October by the Italian Football Federation for betting on matches, but never those of Juventus or Cremonese where he spent a season on loan. The original 12-month sentence was reduced to seven because the player cooperated with the investigation and accepted a treatment program to combat gambling addiction.
According to Italian media, the young midfielder, addicted to gambling, accumulated three million euros in debt by playing on illegal platforms.
Another great Italian hope, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, was suspended for ten months for betting, notably on matches of his former team, AC Milan.
