The NHL has suspended Vegas Golden Knights forward Brett Howden for two games for giving an “illegal hit to the head” of Seattle Kraken forward Brandon Tanev on Tuesday night.

Howden will lose nearly $20,000 in salary, and that money will go to the Players’ Emergency Relief Fund.

In the video explaining the reason for the suspension, the NHL says Howden made Tanev’s head the primary target and that the hit was “preventable.” The league also said this was Howden’s first infraction in his 280-game career.

Howden received a match penalty for the hit, which occurred six minutes into the third period of the Knights’ 4-1 season-opening victory.
