(Toronto) The Toronto Blue Jays acquired St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong and cash on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays sent 24-year-old pitching prospect Matt Svanson to the Cardinals.

The trade comes a day after star shortstop Bo Bichette suffered a right knee injury in a game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Blue Jays had not announced the duration of Bichette’s injury as of Tuesday afternoon.

DeJong has batted .233 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in 81 games this season.

The 29-year-old DeJong spent his entire seven-year career in the Majors with the Cardinals, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft.

In 2019, DeJong hit a career-high 30 homers and drove in 78 runs, en route to an All-Star selection.

The Blue Jays have assigned outfielder Jordan Luplow to make room for DeJong on the 40-man roster.
