No matter where we are, the wine always brings to mind France. However, French wine consumers are becoming fewer and fewer. Indeed, for the past twenty years, wine consumption has been falling sharply in France. According to Statista, “behind this drop is firstly the argument of the cost of purchase, the average price for a liter of wine having increased by almost one euro per bottle between 2010 and 2019. But the French are especially now showing more demanding in their choice of wine, the result of a higher level of knowledge in the field”. However, this is not the only reason for this decline. Indeed, the French are increasingly reducing their alcohol consumption.

The French still have the reputation of being good wine producers. But is it the truth? Is France the country that produces the best wines? The answer is no ! And yes, even if it may surprise some, the best bottles in the world are found elsewhere. According to the Decanter World Wine Avards 2023, one country trumps all those who are nevertheless known for their wine: Australia.

Nevertheless, France is still in the race and as Marmiton tells us, “French wine continues to seduce outside the borders. Its export notably generated a record turnover of 17.2 billion euros in 2022, i.e. an increase of more than 10% in one year”.
