The San Francisco 49ers announced that quarterback Brock Purdy must undergo concussion protocol and his participation in this week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals is uncertain.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy reported concussion symptoms during the flight to San Francisco after Monday night’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Purdy was feeling better Wednesday and was scheduled to participate in a portion of the 49ers’ practice. However, he will have to pass other exams before getting the green light to play Sunday against the Bengals.

“He definitely has enough time,” Shanahan said. He just has to go through the whole process. »

Shanahan added that Purdy could play without practicing during the week if he gets the green light to play.

He also said he wasn’t sure when Purdy suffered a concussion, but that it was possible he suffered it during a sneak attempt midway through the fourth quarter. Shanahan said he didn’t see any signs affecting Purdy’s play, however, who was the victim of two interceptions on the last two offensive series in a 22-17 loss.

If Purdy is unable to play on Sunday, the 49ers will turn to Sam Darnold. The latter was selected third overall in the draft by the New York Jets in 2018, but struggled in his first five seasons in the NFL with the Jets and Carolina Panthers.

Darnold joined the 49ers as a free agent this offseason. He won the reserve quarterback position during camp, to the detriment of Trey Lance, drafted third overall by the 49ers in 2021.
