(New York) Gleyber Torres hit his 100th career home run, Anthony Rizzo added a two-run homer and the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-1 on Monday night.

The Phillies, defending National champions, are 0-4 at the start of the season for the first time since 2016. The only team to win a World Series after starting the season with four losses is the Atlanta Braves in 2021.

Nestor Cortes (1-0) gave up one run and seven hits in five innings and had some important defensive play in his start to the season.

Cortes has allowed a run or fewer 16 times since the start of last season.

With the Yankees up 3-1 in the fifth inning, J.T. Realmuto hit a right single and Franchy Cordero’s throw to the plate ended up over catcher Jose Trevino. Cortes called the play, caught Cordero’s throw and relayed to DJ LeMahieu at third base, who touched Brandon Marsh in the back for the out.

Cordero made his first start for the Yankees and hit a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning. Trevino added a single, good for a run in the inning.

Taijuan Walker (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits in four and a third innings.
