(Arlington) When the Chicago Blackhawks selected Connor Bedard first overall in the NHL Draft earlier this summer, the player considered hockey’s next big star pulled on his jersey over his shirt and tie.

Bedard got one step closer to his NHL debut on Tuesday, skating in a red Blackhawks home jersey and full gear for the first time at an NHL Players’ Association event featuring a few recruits. Bedard went through several milestones over the summer: from draft to development camp, from signing his first contract to celebrating his birthday.

Always cautious in front of microphones and cameras, Bedard wouldn’t give up on the possibility of playing his first NHL game against childhood idol Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 10.

He will have to go through the Blackhawks camp first, starting September 22.

“I want to know a good camp first,” Bedard said. If that’s what happens, great. It will be great ! »

Bedard found himself in the spotlight during the two days in the Washington area. He’s been considered a future NHL star since he was 14. It is therefore not this event organized by the AJLNH and Upper Deck that will destabilize him.

“I’ve known crazier,” he said.

Another Blackhawks prospect is taking part in the event. Kevin Korchinski admits to being equally dazzled by Bedard and admiring his relaxed personality despite all the pressure he finds himself under.

“There’s pressure that comes with being a player of this caliber,” Korchinski noted. It’s special to see him manage to block out the spotlight a bit. It shows what type of personality he has. »

Bedard can’t help but smile when he says what’s said about him doesn’t affect him. But he is well aware of the expectations placed on him.

“I focus on my own expectations, my teammates and whatever I can do to improve every day,” Bedard said. I love hockey. External noise is not pressure. It’s just something that’s there. »

“I’ll see how camp goes, then the prep schedule,” he said. I have my own expectations, yes. I want to be a good player, a player who makes a difference and helps his team win. That’s all I can say for now. »
