(Toronto) Online retail giant Amazon.com announced Tuesday that it plans to hire more than 6,000 people across Canada.

The Seattle-based company said the new hires would cover full-time, part-time and seasonal positions.

The new employees will work within Amazon’s operational network in tasks involving warehousing, picking, packing, sorting and shipping customer orders.

The hiring move comes as Amazon invests more than $70 million in pay raises for fulfillment and transportation employees, who will see their average hourly wage increase to $21 per hour, up from 17 $ per hour in 2018.

Under the new compensation plan, full-time and part-time hourly employees will receive pay increases every six months until their 24th month of employment, then another increase in their 36th month of employment.

Amazon operates more than 60 logistics sites in Canada and will open two more this year.
