(New York) Prime Minister François Legault participated Tuesday morning in the announcement of the start of construction of the New York converter station for the Champlain Hudson Power Express transmission line.

The Quebec Prime Minister gave a speech there, where he notably praised Quebec’s climate record.

Also present, the governor of New York State, Kathy Hochul, thanked François Legault.

This station will be the final destination of the Champlain Hudson Power Express line. This transmission line, approximately 600 kilometers long, will connect Hertel substation in La Prairie to New York.

In November 2021, Hydro-Québec signed a contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the export of 10.4 terawatt hours of electricity to the American metropolis for 25 years.

The Quebec portion of this line is nearly 60 kilometers.

It is Quebec which will pay for the station in Hertel and the portion of the line on its territory. The Americans will pay for their part of the line – about 545 kilometers – and their converter station.

This line will provide the equivalent of 20% of New York City’s electricity needs. Its commissioning is scheduled for May 2026. The benefits are estimated at 30 billion, according to the Prime Minister.
