(Buffalo) Forward Zemgus Girgensons will return to Buffalo for a 10th season after signing a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

Girgensons is the longest-serving Sabers player with the club. It could have enjoyed full autonomy next month. This move by the 29-year-old skater is a sign that he feels the team is finally on the right track.

Although their streak without making the playoffs is now 12 seasons, the Sabers posted 42 wins last season, their highest total since 2010-11, the last season in which they made the playoffs. The Sabers finished 10th in the East in 2022-23, two points from a playoff berth.

The Latvian was a Sabers first-round pick in 2012. He has proven to be an effective defensive forward over the years. After scoring 10 goals and 18 points in 80 games last season, he took his career tally to 81 goals and 174 points in 625 games.
