Argentina scored two goals within five minutes late in the second half and drew a 2-2 draw against South Africa on Friday at the Women’s World Cup in soccer.

Both teams picked up a first point in their second outing of the tournament. Sweden and Italy lead Group G with three points each. They have a meeting on Saturday.

Sophia Braun reached the top right corner of the net in the 74th minute to put Argentina on the tally. Romina Nunez then tied the game with a header in the 79th minute.

The game was played in front of just 8,834 spectators at Dunedin Stadium, New Zealand.

Linda Motlhalo gave South Africa the lead in the 30th minute of play. She scored from a pass from Thembi Kgatlana, taking advantage of a hesitation from the Argentine players, who believed there was an offside on the sequence. Kgatlana widened the gap by scoring in the 66th minute of play.

Despite Argentina’s comeback, South Africa collected their first point in their history at the Women’s World Cup. She had lost each of her matches in the preliminary phase in 2019, as well as her first match in 2023.

Argentina are also looking for a first victory in their history at the tournament, after 11 meetings.
