(New York) Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, 2nd in the world and guaranteed to become N.1 at the end of the tournament, qualified for the semi-finals of the United States Open on Wednesday by eliminating Chinese Qinwen Zheng (23rd) 6-1, 6-4.
“I played very well, I’m very happy with my match and to have another chance to go further at the US Open,” said the 25-year-old, who won the U.S. Open in January. Australia and who had lost the last two years at the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.

She didn’t even see the light of day in the first set where Sabalenka won 25 of the 34 points played.
In a quarter of an hour the Belarusian led 5-0. The Chinese then won her first game, but was unable to prevent her opponent from completing the first round in 27 minutes.
No break point to defend, two break points converted out of five, seven winning points for three unforced errors (against 2 and 7 for Zheng), Sabalenka crushed this first set.
The match then balanced until Sabalenka broke to lead 4-3, taking advantage of an unforced error from Zheng, the 14th of 16 in the end.
The Chinese held her final face-off by saving a first match point in passing, to force Sabalenka to serve to win the game. What she did without shaking by concluding on her second match point.
