(New York) A US publication reports that Costco customers in the US are increasingly being asked to show member photo ID at self-checkout checkouts as the company aims to curb the unauthorized card sharing.

In a written communication provided to Business Insider, Costco says it has noticed an increase in the number of shoppers using cards that do not belong to them, particularly at self-service checkouts. The company says it believes it is unfair that people who are not members can enjoy the same benefits and rates as those who are.

Costco already requires customers to show their membership card at regular checkouts; we will now ask to see their card with their photo at the self-service checkouts.

The company also claims that requiring proof of membership reduces incidents of shoplifting.

Business Insider points out that although Costco is the third-largest retailer in the world, it derives a significant portion of its profits from membership fees.

In Canada, Costco is one of the five big food chains, along with the Canadian companies Loblaw, Metro and Sobeys and the American Walmart.
