(Toronto) Less than 24 hours after calling a strike, the Unifor union announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement in principle with General Motors that is inspired by the collective agreement ratified at Ford Motor last month.

The union’s national president, Lana Payne, said the terms included everything the company had opposed, including pensions, income supports for retirees and the transfer of temporary workers to permanent positions.

The new tentative agreement covers nearly 4,300 Ontario auto workers at GM’s Oshawa assembly plant, St. Catharines propulsion plant and Woodstock parts distribution center.

Unifor says strike action that began at midnight is being suspended to allow members to vote on the tentative agreement.

GM Canada President Marissa West said in a statement that the agreement recognized the many contributions of team members with significant increases in salaries, benefits and job security.

The company says it expects work to resume at its three facilities as of Tuesday afternoon.
