Ranked fourth in the world, the athlete from Buffalo dominated 6-3 for breakage.

Her next rival will be Ukrainian Elina Svitolina on Friday.

Tournament champion in 2019, Pegula made it to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon this year.

Second-seeded Caroline Garcia was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. She will play against Liudmila Samsonova of Russia on Friday.

In the evening, Laval’s Leylah Fernandez must face Maria Sakkari, the fourth seed.

In the men’s draw, Grigor Dimitrov beat Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4, 6-3, while J.J. Wolf defeated Michael Mmoh 6-4, 7-6 (5).
