Alex DeBrincat continued his strong start to the season by scoring his first hat trick for the Detroit Red Wings, who beat the Calgary FlamesĀ 6-2 on Sunday.

The Red Wings have won their last five games.

DeBrincat, acquired from the Ottawa Senators this summer, already has eight goals this season, an NHL high.

Quebecer Joe Veleno scored his third goal in two games and Dylan Larkin added a goal and an assist. Jake Walman scored his first of the season, while Justin Holl and Lucas Raymond both finished the game with three assists. James Reimer made 29 saves for the Red Wings.

Andrew Mangiapane and Yegor Sharangovich scored for the Flames. Goaltender Dan Vladar stopped 24 shots. The Flames end a five-game road streak with a 1-3-1 record.

DeBrincat scored his first goal of the game after just 1:59 of play, on a pass from Holl. Veleno made the red light shine in the middle of the period when he deflected defender Ben Chiarot’s point shot.

The Red Wings made it 3-0 two minutes into the second period. Larkin put the puck over Vladar’s right shoulder.

The Flames scored their first goal of the game with 7:48 left in the period, when Mangiapane took advantage of a rebound from Mikael Backlund.

DeBrincat quickly responded with a slap shot that beat Vladar to the stick side.

Sharangovich reduced the gap to 4-2 at the end of the second period with a point shot.

DeBrincat completed his hat trick at the start of the third period, with a shot from the left circle that beat the goalkeeper on the near side.
