(Banff) Canada’s leading media companies are joining forces to reduce their environmental footprint.

The creation of the new Canadian Broadcasters United for Sustainability group was announced Sunday at the Banff International Media Festival.

Its 22 members include Asian Television Network, Bell Media, CBC/Radio-Canada, Corus Entertainment, OUTtv, Rogers and Télé-Québec.

They plan to meet at least quarterly to address five goals aimed at making Canadian media production greener and more sustainable.

“Canadian broadcasters play an important role in creating, supporting and delivering content for people living in Canada; from this role stems the obligation to place eco-responsibility at the heart of their processes related to commissioned productions, ”they explain in a press release.

In particular, they want to collaborate on sustainability initiatives to avoid duplication, increase the reach and impact of sustainability actions, and consult with marginalized communities who are disproportionately affected by climate change.

Media companies also promise to improve their efforts to produce sustainable content and inspire people to make more sustainable choices, although they note that this pledge would exclude news and current affairs reporting.
