(New York) Buck Showalter let it be known on Sunday that he will not return for a third season as manager of the New York Mets.

Showalter, 67, made the announcement before the game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets entered the day with a 74-86 record and 29 1/2 games behind the NL East champion Atlanta Braves.

Showalter became manager of the Mets ahead of the 2022 season and guided the New York team to a 101-61 record last season. He received the title of manager of the year in the National.

The Mets are expected to hire David Stearns as president of baseball operations, a senior position above general manager Billy Eppler in the hierarchy, and Showalter’s departure clears the way for Stearns to choose his manager.
