(Montreal) José Sébéloué, singer, musician, and one of the founding members of the Compagnie Créole group, died Sunday morning at the age of 74.

His production team announced the news in a press release the same day. “José passed away peacefully this morning (Sunday) in France with his loved ones,” it read.

The founding member of the group, notably known for his songs Ca fait rire les Oiseaux, It’s Good for Morale and Le Bal Masqué, began his musical career in the 1970s in Guyana, his native country. He was then part of a group called Pop Corn.

He left for France in 1975, where he participated in the creation of the Compagnie Créole. On the group’s albums, you can hear him sing, as well as play guitar and percussion.

Mr. Sébéloué made his last career tour of Quebec last March. The group was to perform in the province in the last few days.

“The shows that the Compagnie Créole was to give in Quebec had to be canceled at the beginning of the week, since the other members of the group flew to Paris to be at its bedside”, also indicated Productions Martin Leclerc in the press release.

José Sébéloué was born on September 17, 1948, in Guyana.
