In a context of deep economic crisis in supermarkets, price increases continue to advance despite a stabilization for certain products. Inflation has broken all records in France for nearly seven months. Consequence of this complicated period for the French, who see their purchasing power reduced each month.

The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) has released the figures concerning the evolution of prices in supermarkets. In March, an increase of more than 5.7% was observed, while the month of February was marked by a 6.3% surge in tariffs. Nevertheless, these figures show a slight improvement even if there is still a long way to go and the coming months could be much worse. The food market rose 14.8% in February against 15.9% in March.

Most of these figures are linked to the cost of energy, which is also rising sharply. Despite the tariff shield put in place in 2021, the month of February saw an increase of 14.1% compared to 4.9% in March.

The shelves of our supermarkets have also been hit hard by a massive price increase. Among the departments most affected, we find respectively on the first three steps of the podium:

Following the government’s introduction of the “anti-inflation” quarter at the beginning of March, large retailers had to stand out. The latter asked distributors to present a list of products with the lowest possible prices.
