According to INSEE, food inflation jumped 14.5% over one year. Since autumn 2022, prices have been on the rise in supermarkets. However, food represents a significant sum of the household budget, with nearly 18% of monthly expenses, according to Midi Libre.

Compared to March 2021, the increase is even 17.7%. For the same shopping trolley at 100 euros two years ago, you now have to pay 117 euros. According to BFMTV, the most inflationary products are frozen meats (31.6%), tissues (30.4%), ready meals (30.3%) and toilet paper (27.4%).

In March, in supermarkets, it was the food section that increased the most, with an increase of 1.9% on average. According to BFMTV, the departments most affected are those of the savory grocery store (3%): pasta, rice, cans, sauce… Then follow the department of the sweet grocery store and that of the creamery, on the rise by 2.7%. The prices of water and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2.5%.

In this context, according to the Cetelem Observatory, 69% of French people have had to give up certain food shopping over the past 12 months. 30% even reveal that they have done without products that are nevertheless considered “essential”.
