A sweet-tasting substance extracted mainly from sugar cane or sugar beet, sugar brings happiness to some and misfortune to others. It is well known that sugar can have harmful effects on the health of consumers, such as heart problems, cancers or disorders such as asthma. It is also appreciated by the majority of its buyers looking for a little pleasure or who simply wish to regain strength for the end of the day. However, its current consumption is largely revised downwards due to its higher price.

The world sugar market is in a complicated period. However, demand is not falling, nor is its consumption. The high price levels are mainly the result of the decline in its production in the producing countries. Among them are India, Thailand and China, not to mention France and the United States. But the major importer remains Brazil, a country for which many specialists are worried. The global sugar balance depends in some way on the country’s production, but also on the impact of the El Ninor phenomenon ravaging the plantations.

In France, the price of sugar has become unmanageable. In January, it peaked with a kilo of sugar at an average price of 1.30 euros, while in December for the same quantity, you had to pay “only” 0.95 euros, as La Dépêche reports. In terms of percentages, the price of sugar has increased by 45%, which means that it has doubled since April 2020. Global markets are heating up and the price of sugar is breaking records. This ends the relatively low tariffs since the European sugar market reform of 2017.
