Carl Crennel, a linebacker who won three Gray Cups in the 1970s, has died at the age of 74.

The Montreal Alouettes announced the news on Tuesday.

Crennel appeared six times in the Gray Cup game, winning it with the Alouettes in 1974 and 1977, as well as with the Edmonton club in 1979.

During his 11 season CFL career, Crennel also played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He retired at the end of the 1981 season.

A native of Lynchburg, Va., Crennel was named to the East All-Star Team in 1973, 1978 and 1979.

Before coming to Canada, Crennel played a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had played at the American college level with the West Virginia Mountaineers.

His brother, Romeo Crennel, was head coach of the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs.
