(TORONTO) Former Montreal Alouettes defensive coordinator Rich Stubler has died at the age of 74.

That’s what an official from Clearwater Academy International, where Stubler served as defensive coordinator in Florida, confirmed on Sunday. The causes of death have not been disclosed.

In Montreal, he was recruited during the brief stint of Mike Sherman at the helm of the team.

Stubler, a native of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, came to Canada in 1983 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as defensive boss. He remained there until 1986.

He was also employed by the Toronto Argonauts, Edmonton Elks, BC Lions and Calgary Stampeders, spending several stints with a few of these organizations.

For example, he was part of the Argonauts coaching staff four times. He notably served as the team’s head coach in 2008, but was fired under the team’s 4-6 record during the season.

Stubler has won five Gray Cups and is recognized as one of the most innovative defensive coaches in league history. He also held various roles in the NCAA and Arena Football League.
