Electronic toll payment is appreciated for its practicality and speed. Once endowed with an electronic toll subscription, a motorist no longer needs to queue and wait to pay for his passage. All he has to do is pass on the “T” line for the barrier to rise automatically and the amount to be debited directly from the driver’s bank account.

The electronic toll lanes “represent less than 20% of the lanes but they drain 52% of the traffic. Electronic toll is all the more effective when there is a lot of traffic”, explains Christophe Boutin, general delegate of the Association of companies French highways (ASFA), to 60 million consumers.

The electronic toll badge is obtained by taking out a subscription with one of the motorway companies. There are different types, with variable prices depending on the frequency of use of the electronic toll. Most offers work on all routes for occasional or regular use. Prices for monthly subscriptions are between 1.50 and 3.50 euros.

The badge is provided free of charge but there may be commissioning fees ranging from 10 to 20 euros. In addition, shipping costs, from 4 to 6 euros, may also be added. Finally, the companies charge an inactivity fee of 10 euros if the badge is not used for fourteen consecutive months. This information is often given in small print. However, it is essential to take them into account when comparing offers.
