(Phoenix) The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired power slugger Eugenio Suarez from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala.

The 32-year-old third baseman Suarez has hit 246 home runs since 2014. He fills a need for the D’backs at third bag, occupied primarily by Evan Longoria and Emmanuel Rivera last season.

Suarez provides another power hitter for the National champions. He hit .232/.323/.391 with 22 homers and 96 RBIs last season, while also being used as a designated hitter.

He will receive 11 million US next season and the team has an option clause for the 2025 season at a cost of 15 million or 2 million in the event of a buyout.

Vargas is a 24-year-old right-hander who made his major league debut with the Diamondbacks this season, pitching in five games.

Zavala, 30, has been a backup catcher with the Chicago White Sox and D’backs the past three seasons.

Jerry Dipoto, Mariners president of baseball operations, said the team sees Zavala as Cal Raleigh’s backup next year.
