It was a government promise. A drop in prices on supermarket shelves from July 1, 2023. According to Bruno Le Maire, who explained this at the beginning of June on BFMTV, it is from this moment that the drop in commodity prices would be reflected on the shelves.

Pasta, oils, poultry… According to the Minister of the Economy, consumers could expect up to 10% reduction on certain products. For that, he met the food industry a month ago. Finally, no less than 75 manufacturers have committed to reducing their prices. Even if the promises are not really up to par, a drop in the prices of certain categories of products is observed, as suggested by the latest figures for the month of June 2023.

Year-on-year, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month, consumer prices would have increased by 4.5% in June 2023, after 5.1% the previous month. This further decline in inflation would be due to the decline in energy prices and the slowdown in food prices. Services prices would increase at a rate close to that of the previous month and those of manufactured goods would accelerate slightly due to the later start and end of the summer sales this year.

Over one month, consumer prices are expected to increase by 0.2% in June 2023, after falling by 0.1% in May. Energy prices should rebound slightly in the wake of oil product prices. Finally, food prices, excluding fresh produce, would slow down for the third consecutive month, according to the latest figures published by INSEE on June 30.
