(Atlanta) The Atlanta Braves placed right-handed pitcher Yonny Chirinos on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a sore elbow.

The trade, made retroactive to Sunday, freed up roster space for the recall of right-hander Allan Winans, who was scheduled to start the evening for Game 1 of a three-game series against the Mets. New York.

Chirinos has been in trouble since being waived off for the Tampa Bay Rays a month ago. He allowed 23 earned runs on 33 hits, including five home runs, in 22 1/3 innings. He hasn’t made it past the fifth inning of all of his starts.

In 20 games this season, Chirinos is 5-5 with an m. p. Mr. of 5.40.

After going seven scoreless innings against the Mets on Aug. 12 for his first major league win, Winans gets another chance to become the Braves’ fifth starter for the remainder of the season.

With AAA Gwinnett, Winans went 8-3, 279 in 20 games, including 15 starts.

Despite leading the Majors at 80-43, the Braves have used 15 starters this season and struggled to fill the bottom two spots in the rotation following serious injuries to Max Fried and Kyle. Wright.

Fried returned to the game just over two weeks ago, solidifying the fourth starter role, behind Spencer Strider, Bryce Elder and Charlie Morton.
