(London) The four members of the K-pop girl group Blackpink received one of the United Kingdom’s highest decorations from King Charles III on Wednesday, in recognition of their commitment to the fight against global warming.
The four singers – Jennie Kim, Jisoo Kim, Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban and Roseanne “Rose” Park – were made Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by the Sovereign during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace .
They were decorated in the presence of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife Kim Keon Hee, currently on a state visit to London.
In a press release, the palace explained that it was thus rewarding the commitment of the four artists during COP26 which took place in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2021.
“The group has encouraged millions of young people to take an interest in the UN global conference on climate change,” the palace said.
In 2021, the members of Blackpink, who have tens of millions of subscribers on social networks, published videos to encourage young people to learn about climate change.
Blackpink, formed in 2016, was also named ambassador for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
King Charles III has been committed to the environment for many years, and delivered the opening speech at COP26 in Glasgow.
He will travel next week to the United Arab Emirates where COP28 is taking place.
