Mobile payment, that is to say through your smartphone equipped with NFC technology, is gradually becoming more democratic in France. This device, having made its debut in 2015, currently represents 4.6% of contactless bank card transactions. Its use is, unsurprisingly, much more widespread among people under 35, who tend to quickly become passionate about this kind of innovative technology.

Concretely, it is a question of using your mobile phone as a bank card. It is thus possible to pay for your shopping by presenting your mobile above a contactless payment terminal. In order to make your phone suitable for this type of operation, you must first install a dedicated mobile application: for Android Google Pay systems and for iPhone Apple Pay. Another alternative: the application created by a group of French banks, PayLib.

29% of people under 35 say they regularly use mobile payments, twice as many as the general population. The payments thus made relate to amounts amounting on average to 21 euros, while the average payment by contactless is 16 euros, as reported by our colleagues from MoneyVox.

In recent times, the rate of contactless payment fraud in general has increased, warns the OSMP, an organization attached to the Banque de France. Indeed, in the first half of 2022, the rate in question increased to 0.016%, compared to 0.013% in 2021. This is where mobile payment comes into play: indeed, we are witnessing an increase in cases of theft and theft of digital bank cards from digital “wallets” that allow you to make these payments through your smartphone.

The Apple Pay “wallet” is also the very first concerned. The banks would be partially at fault: indeed, the protection and authentication devices linked to the addition of a new card in its digital wallet leave something to be desired. The OSMP has therefore announced that it will encourage the banks in question to respect the strongest security criteria for this type of procedure.
