(Cancun) French Open finalist Karolina Muchova withdrew from the WTA Finals on Tuesday due to a right wrist injury, and as a result she will be replaced by Greece’s Maria Sakkari.

“Together with the members of my team and the doctors, we tried everything until the last moment to relieve this wrist injury. Unfortunately, the rehabilitation period to heal this injury is longer than expected, Muchova said. As a result, I had to make this unpleasant decision. »

Muchova, eighth player in the world, lost to Iga Swiatek in the final of the French Open last June. She would have taken part in the WTA Finals for the first time in her career.

Sakkari is the ninth seed, and she was narrowly excluded from the tournament which will take place in Cancun, Mexico. However, she obtained her pass following Muchova’s withdrawal. Sakkari will compete in the WTA Finals for a third year in a row; she reached the semifinals last year in Fort Worth, Texas, after posting an immaculate 3-0 record during the preliminary phase.

The WTA Finals will get underway on Sunday.

Other players who will participate in this competition are Aryna Sabalenka (No. 1), Swiatek (No. 2), Coco Gauff (No. 3), Elena Rybakina (No. 4), Jessica Pegula (No. 5), Marketa Vondrousova (No. 6) and Ons Jabeur (no. 7).

Sabalenka, Swiatek, Gauff and Vondrousova each won a Grand Slam title this season.
