(Budapest) British Columbian Ethan Katzberg triumphed in the hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday.

The 21-year-old from Nanaimo set a Canadian record of 81.25 meters on his fifth attempt.

He broke his own mark of 81.18m, set on Saturday.

Katzberg has reached the podium in each of his 12 competitions in 2023, including six victories.

Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki finished second (81.02), followed by Hungary’s Bence Halasz (80.82).

The Pole Pawel Fajedk deserved the fourth position.

He was aiming for a sixth world title, which would have tied a record.

Fajdek had won the last five World Championships.

He has never done better than bronze in three Olympiads, however.

Adam Keenan of Victoria finished in 11th place at 74.49.

In the 10,000m, Canadian Mohammed Ahmed finished sixth. The 32-year-old won silver in the 5000m at the Tokyo Games.
