(Washington) Lavalloise Leylah Annie Fernandez was eliminated in the round of 16 at the Washington tournament on Friday.

Fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece won 7-5, 6-2 in just over an hour and a half of play.

Fernandez committed six double faults during the duel. She was the victim of five service breaks in 13 occasions.

For his part, Sakkari hit five aces and won 75% of the points contested on his first serve. She allowed two break points to her rival, who took advantage each time.

Sakkari will be back on the court later Friday for a quarter-final match against American Madison Keys.

The match between Fernandez and Sakkari was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, but rain forced the postponement of the evening schedule.

For her part, favorite Jessica Pegula reached the semi-finals with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elina Svitolina.

Pegula saved six break points in the third set — five at 3-2, and the last when she served for the game.

Svitolina, who returned to action in April after giving birth to a child in October, reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last month.

In the four aces, Pegula will face the winner of the duel between Sakkari and Keys.

On the other side of the table, Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic have an appointment in a quarter-final, while defending champion Liudmila Samsonova will cross swords with Marta Kostyuk in the other quarter-final.
