The Washington Capitals have promoted Brian MacLellan to president of hockey operations, a role that will join the role of general manager he has held since 2014.

As part of the move, announced on Monday, Dick Patrick becomes chairman of the Capitals board of directors while his son Chris was promoted to associate managing director.

For many years, MacLellan had served as assistant to general manager George McPhee before replacing him in that role. MacLellan held the position when the Capitals won the Stanley Cup in 2018.

The Capitals were in the playoffs for MacLellan’s first eight seasons in that role, a streak that ended last year. Over the past decade, the Capitals rank third in the NHL in most wins.

As part of his new role, Chris Patrick will oversee the Advanced Statistics and Player Contract Negotiations departments, among other things. The 47-year-old Patrick will enter his 16th season with the organization.

As for Dick Patrick, 76, he joined the Capitals in 1982. Since his arrival, the team has made the playoffs 32 times, in 40 seasons.
