In the currency market, the Canadian dollar traded at an average rate of 73.93 cents US, down from 74.19 cents US on Thursday.

On the New York Commodities Exchange, crude oil prices fell 96 cents US to US$79.74 per barrel while natural gas prices climbed 16 cents US to US$2.17 per million of BTUs.

The price of gold returned US$22.60 to US$2003.80 an ounce and that of copper depreciated nearly 4 US cents to US$3.98 a pound.
