(Los Angeles) Shakira will be honored at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) next month.

The Colombian singer will receive the Video Vanguard Award, a prize that has already been awarded in the past to Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Missy Elliott.

She will also perform on the VMAs stage for the first time in 17 years.

Shakira has won four VMAs in her career, starting with her victory at the International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North) in 2000.

This year, she is nominated for four awards: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration (for TQG, with Karol G) and two nominations in the Best Latin category – for the same collaboration with Karol G and for her solo song, Acróstico.

“Shakira is a truly global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique musical prowess. She is a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music,” said Bruce Gillmer, Director of Music Content at Paramount and President of Music, Music Talent, programming and events at Paramount.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. She leads with eight nominations — seven for her Anti-Hero music video and one for Artist of the Year — followed by SZA, who has six.

The VMAs will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on September 12.
