(Toronto) Rogers Communications said Friday that it has activated wireless service for its customers in all Toronto subway stations, as well as in the tunnels between Sheppard West and Vaughan Metropolitan Center stations.
The move comes as the company continues to build 5G infrastructure for the entire subway tunnel network — a process that is expected to take two years, it estimated when it announced its plans in April.
Last month, customers of rival operators Bell Canada and Telus gained access to cellular service in the busiest sections of the Toronto subway, after Rogers activated its enhanced network for the first time in stations and tunnels across the Toronto subway system. city center for its own customers.
The service for all carriers follows months of tense negotiations between Rogers, Bell and Telus, prompting the federal government to set a deadline for all Toronto subway passengers to have cellular connectivity.
Rogers did not specify in its Friday announcement when Bell and Telus customers could expect to receive service on the rest of the activated network.
The companies face a Dec. 20 deadline to negotiate commercial deals to provide long-term subway service.
