(Los Angeles) Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the U.S. Open, the third round of the Grand Slam scheduled for June, following surgery on his right ankle which had already forced him to forfeit the PGA Championship , the organizers announced on Monday.

Woods, 47, “has stepped down as a guest player as he recovers from recent surgery,” the US Golf Association (USGA) says on its website.

The American with 15 Majors had surgery in April on his right ankle, which has serious consequences (post-traumatic arthritis) from a car accident in February 2021.

His postoperative rehabilitation had already led Tiger Woods to give up the PGA Championship, the second Grand Slam of the season which has just ended in Rochester.

Before that, in early April, Woods suffered physically during the Augusta Masters, to the point of dropping out in the third round.

The United States Open will therefore take place without him, from June 15 to 18, in Los Angeles. Three times winner of the event, in 2000, 2002 and 2008, the golfer has played it 22 times, but his last participation dates back to 2019.

After his serious car accident in early 2021, during which he suffered several open fractures in his legs, Tiger Woods made a spectacular return two months later to the greens in Augusta. But he has only played a handful of other tournaments since.
