In a press release on Wednesday, Quebecor announced the end of MAtv Montreal, a community channel distributed to Videotron subscribers. MAtv’s activities elsewhere in Quebec will however be maintained.

Quebecor explains that it made this decision to close “in a context of strong media competition and significant financial challenges for the entire television industry”. The equivalent of five positions are abolished, to which are added three other positions in its regional stations.

“Through this decision for MAtv Montreal, we wish to support the offer of local news produced by our general-interest channel, TVA, for the benefit of citizens,” said Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO, in a press release. the management of Quebecor.

MAtv Montreal shows that have been produced over the past few months will air until summer 2024.

MAtv continues its activities elsewhere in Quebec – in Bas-Saint-Laurent, Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Granby, Outaouais, Quebec City, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Sherbrooke and Sorel-Tracy , the statement said.

In February, 240 positions were eliminated at Quebecor, including 140 at Groupe TVA, affected by a drop in revenue. Remember that on August 18, Bell Media announced the end of the Vrak channel, which was also hit by the difficult financial context in which the media operates, but also by Videotron’s decision to remove the channel from the schedules of Helix and right away.
