(Miami) The American Football League (NFL) will adopt a new helmet specially designed to protect quarterbacks from concussions, the NFL announced Thursday.

According to the NFL, impact between helmets and the ground causes about half of concussions suffered by quarterbacks. Last season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spent several weeks away from the field following an injury of this type.

“We’ve seen an increase in quarterback concussions over the past year, and it’s been the same helmet-to-ground contact dynamic,” said Jeff Miller, vice president director of the NFL responsible in particular for the communication, in NFL.com.

“It’s always the quarterback who gets targeted, gets tackled, and has his head hit the ground with the ball in his hand,” he added.

These future helmets, which modify the shock absorption on the ground, were developed following the tests carried out jointly by the NFL and the Players Association.
