End of heat waves and drought in September 2022? Nothing is certain. After a particularly scorching month of July and a month of August marked by 3 heat waves and several heat waves, September promises to be, in this line, still arid.

“The drought will continue in most regions, and even worsen north of the Loire, according to meteorologist Régis Crepet on La Chaîne Météo. September could in turn record a positive temperature anomaly.”

During this last month of summer, the normal seasonal temperatures established by Météo France are between 10.4°C and 24.8°C. However, according to the Weather Channel specialist, next week is differentiated by a thermometer up to 5°C to 7°C above these normals.

Especially since even if storms seem to be looming on the reliefs, the water supply will not be enough to stop the drought which continues to rage. Worse still, “the high pressures located over northern Europe will maintain dry weather over all regions north of the Loire. A light north-easterly wind will dry out the soil and vegetation a little more”, indicates the meteorologist.

According to the forecaster, September will still be very dry. Indeed, the phenomenon which causes significant water stress throughout France will worsen in the north of the Loire. While the localized thunderstorms present in the south will not improve the situation.

On the other side: “It will be almost a copy-paste of the previous week with a northern half closer to the high and therefore dry”. Temperatures should nevertheless drop slightly, but “will remain above normal”, warns the scientist. “No freshness in sight!”.

After some instability in the weather during the first two weeks of September in the south, the high pressures will be back. They will bring with them their share of dry and sunny weather, this time over all the French departments. Which doesn’t necessarily bode well…

“Temperatures could well start to rise again with a risk of late heat (> 30°C), worries the forecaster. In this scenario, drought conditions will again become very worrying in a large number of regions.”

“At this stage, the reliability of the forecasts is still very limited”, warns the specialist. For him, it is possible to hope: “a semblance of zonal at the end of the month, that is to say a parade of disturbances in the north”.

Could this be a harbinger of the return of freshness? Everything is still to be determined… Nevertheless: “Temperatures could […] end up reaching seasonal norms at the end of the month”, indicates, optimistically, Regis Crepet. However, “In the south, a new stormy trend will emerge in a heavy atmosphere”.
