(Stuttgart) Qualifier Marton Fucsovics upset Taylor Fritz 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals of the Stuttgart Open on Friday.

Fritz, seeded number two and eighth player in the world, found himself on the heels from the first game of the match, during which he was broken.

Fucsovics scored his second break of the match at 5-5 in the second set, before closing the books on his fourth match point.

On Tuesday, in a first-round match, Fucsovics came from behind and defeated Ontario’s Denis Shapovalov in three sets.

Fucsovics will face another American in the semi-finals. Third-seeded Frances Tiafoe is the highest-ranked player still in the tournament following a 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Lorenzo Musetti.

Tiafoe reaches the semi-finals of a grass-court tournament for the first time.

In another quarter-final match, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, ranked 14th in the world, got the better of Australia’s Christopher O’Connell, 6-4, 6-4.

Later on Friday, Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff knocked out French veteran Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5.

Yesterday Gasquet scored the 600th victory of his career on the ATP Tour, surprising Greek tournament favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets of 7-6 (8), 2-6, 7-5.
