(London) After a season below his expectations, British tennis player Andy Murray has separated for the third time from his coach Ivan Lendl, like him former world No.1, he announced on Friday.
Murray won all three Grand Slam titles under the aegis of Lendl, a Czech national before becoming an American, and took him over as coach last March.
If the Scottish player, now 36 years old, managed to climb back into the top 50 in the world (42nd) after experiencing serious hip problems, he did not obtain the expected results.
“Ivan has been by my side through the biggest moments of my career and I can’t thank him enough for everything he has helped me achieve,” said Murray. “He’s a unique personality who knows what winning takes and I’ve learned a lot from him over the years.”
Lendl had already coached Murray from 2013 to 2014 then from 2016 to 2017.
The reluctance of Lendl, aged 63, to travel far from his bases in the United States is said to be one of the reasons which prompted the two men to interrupt their collaboration again.
