Less than a year after leading the New Jersey Devils to their best regular season in franchise history, head coach Lindy Ruff has agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed the news Wednesday, the day before the Devils’ home opener against the Detroit Red Wings.

“This young and exciting team has grown since Lindy joined the Devils organization,” said Devils operations manager David Blitzer in a press release. Lindy is one of the most successful coaches in NHL history and has fully deserved this contract extension. »

Fitzgerald said before the start of training camp that team management was interested in re-signing Ruff, who is 63 years old. The two sides simply did not have time to discuss it.

The Devils scored 112 points last season after losing their first two home games and fans calling for Ruff to be fired. Soon after, the team went on a 13-game winning streak and fans began chanting “sorry Lindy” in the stands near the end of one of those games.

The Devils made the playoffs for the first time since 2018 and defeated the New York Rangers in the first round in the Eastern Conference, before losing to the Carolina Hurricanes.
