(Phoenix) Baltimore Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson was the unanimous choice for American League Rookie of the Year on Monday.
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll had the same distinction in the National League.
Both players used their power, speed and defensive brilliance to help their teams reach the playoffs, two years after 110-loss seasons.
This is the fifth time where both choices have been unanimous. This hasn’t happened since 2017 (Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger).
Henderson’s brilliant season helped the Maryland club deliver a 101-win campaign.
The 22-year-old played third base and shortstop, very solidly in both cases.
Henderson also hit .255 in 150 games, collecting 28 home runs and 82 RBIs. He also scored 100 runs, stole 10 bases and smacked 29 doubles.
Such numbers are very similar to those of the first season of the legendary Cal Ripken, rookie of the year in the American in 1982.
Henderson earned 30 first-place votes and 150 points in the Baseball Columnists of America poll.
Cleveland Guardians Gunner Tanner Bibee finished second with 20 second-place votes and 67 points.
He was 10-4 with a 2.98 ERA, making 25 starts.
Boston Red Sox slugger Triston Casas placed third with 25 runs.
Casas overcame a slow start, finishing with a .263 average and 24 home runs. He posted a .317 batting average after the All-Star break.
Carroll and Arizona were defeated in five games in the World Series by the Texas Rangers.
The 23-year-old hit .285 in 155 games, collecting 25 home runs and 54 stolen bases.
Starting pitcher Kodai Senga of the New York Mets finished second with 22 second-place votes and 71 points.
After 11 seasons in Japan, he went 12-7 with a 2.98 ERA.
Outfielder James Outman of the Los Angeles Dodgers finished third.
He provided 23 home runs and 16 stolen bases, helping the Dodgers earn a sectional title.
