(Madrid) Quebec’s Leylah Fernandez failed to advance to her third women’s doubles final of the season as she and American teammate Taylor Townsend lost 6-4, 0-6, 10-6 against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia at the Madrid Open on Friday.

Fernandez and Townsend started the game well, smashing their opponents early on.

Azarenka and Haddad Maia came back into the game, however, breaking serve four times in seven chances to take the first set.

Fernandez and Townsend went 6-0 for the second straight game. They broke their opponents three times in six opportunities in the second set, while saving two break points.

In the ultimate set, Fernandez and Townsend only won 25% of the points contested when they had serve.

For the title, Azarenka and Haddad Maia will play American favorites Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.
