(Calgary) Quebecer André Tourigny will be in charge of the coaching staff for Team Canada at the next Ice Hockey World Championship, to be held in May in Tampere, Finland, and Riga, Latvia.

Hockey Canada officials made the announcement Friday morning in a press release.

Arizona Coyotes head coach Tourigny, who hails from Nicolet, served as an assistant to Claude Julien during the 2022 tournament. Canada earned the silver medal after suffering a 4-game loss. -3 against Finland in overtime in the gold medal game.

Tourigny’s assistants will be D.J. Smith, head coach of the Ottawa Senators, Alex Tanguay, assistant head coach with the Detroit Red Wings, and Troy Ryan, who coaches Canada’s women’s team at the World Championship which wraps up Sunday in Brampton, Ont.

Doug Armstrong, general manager of the St. Louis Blues, will fill a similar role with Team Canada.

The Canadian squad will hold a five-day training camp in Budapest, Hungary, starting May 5 before playing their first match of the tournament on May 12 against Latvia.

The Canadian squad must also face Slovenia, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Norway and Czechia during the preliminary round.

The gold medal game will take place on May 28.
