(New York) The Toronto Maple Leafs have offered goaltender Samuel Richard a pro tryout.

Richard, who played for this season’s U Sports champions, the University of New Brunswick Reds, will serve as a substitute for starter Joseph Woll on Thursday against the New York Rangers.

The club’s No. 1 goalkeeper, Ilya Samsonov, is unavailable for the game, while Matt Murray has suffered a concussion.

This is the fourth straight game in which the Leafs have had to use an amateur goaltender as a substitute. In that first game, University of Toronto goaltender Jett Alexander played the last minute in a 7-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Richard, of Sainte-Catherine, Que., went 18-4 with a .933 save percentage and 1.59 goals-against-average this season. The 22-year-old goaltender has played the past three seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
